10:10 Wellbeing Course for Children & Youth by The Ugly Duckling Company

10:10 for Children by the Ugly Duckling Company review by Dave Gidney from Children Worldwide
I used this resource while working in my role with the local church to build relationships with our local school.

It is great resource focussing on wellbeing and children’s mental health.  A resource put together to appeal to the educational establishment, but resourced by the local church. The local children’s worker can use it to start a lunchtime or after school club in school with school approval, or it might also work in other contexts too.

I have run it in my local school for key stage 2 and the kids loved it.  It ran for 10 weeks and we really build up a relationship over those weeks. The school provided a different teacher to join the group each week, and they really valued it too.  They have asked me back to run it again.

The resources are all provided, with plenty of choice of activity to fit your timing and context, with a great range of age-appropriate material from Early Years, through Key stage 1 to key stage 2, which I used it with. Teaching materials, visuals, activities, games, challenges, take away’s and videos were all included in the material too.
There is a lot of material here, and a lot of information about the thinking behind it all too, to help me understand the material more deeply for myself.

The downside?  I would have liked there to be more spiritual input than there was. The material i’d say is low-key Christian. I found I was using it more as a springboard to discussion than overt Christian teaching. However, that was deliberate I felt in order to be acceptable to the context of schools.

I am waiting to hear from the school about when I can do it again!

Here is what the publisher say about the resource:

“10:10 is a well-being resource to help children and young people discover how to live differently and find their best life.

Ten themes built on spirituality and positive psychology explore different ideas around happiness and the art of living life well.  Themes of the sessions are: Finding Happiness, Live now, Thankfulness, Kindness, Forgiveness, Relationships, Body, Mind, Soul, and Mixing it.

There is two versions of the material one for 5-11 year olds and one for 11-17 year olds.

It has been said that childhood should be the happiest time in a person’s life. Yet for thousands of children, the reality can be very different.

10:10 helps children to explore different ways they can look after their well-being and starts by posing the question ‘how can we be happy?’ Across ten themes and through activities, films, discussion and take home ideas 10:10 gives children the opportunity to explore transformative ideas around how to truly flourish.

10:10 can be delivered as a course or as stand-alone themes — meaning it can be easily adapted for use in small groups, lessons, assemblies, and lunch-time clubs. We also highlight in the Leader’s Guide which content is suitable for Reception-age and Key Stages 1 and 2.

10:10 for children is being launched as a digital course — you will receive a USB containing everthing you need.

The course materials for children found on the USB include: a PDF Leader’s Guide, 20 short films, 10 PowerPoints, printable Question Cards, and a range of activity sheets and resources.
