Scripture Union Rooted Youth Resource review by Becky Lawrence

Rooted by Scripture Union – review by Becky Lawrence, Youth & Childrens Worker, St Marks MK

Rooted is a resource for youth written and published by Scripture Union. It’s aimed at young people of any stage of faith (including those not connected to church) and is suitable for age 11-18, its billed as a relational model for youth ministry rather than just a resource.

There are 10 sessions and there’s a leaders guide and journals that go with it for each young person. For each session there are several activities to pick and choose from depending on the length of your session and what will work for your young people. I liked it because the titles and topics of each session were really relevant to my young people and we were able to have discussions about faith and God over the activities in a really natural way which suited my group perfectly as they are not used to Christian teaching or traditional church models. The titles and topics of each session include “Who am I?” “Whats my journey?” “Who’s around me?” and “what do I value?” which all have great opportunites for personal testimony from leaders about how God has made a difference to them linked in with the themes and it’s easy to tie in the Bible verses that link the theme as well.  The journals worked well for us as the young people were able to write down personal thoughts which they didn’t feel comfortable sharing with the group.

The leaders guide can be downloaded for free which is great for those without large budgets and you don’t have to use the journals along with it, but if you’d like those they are 10 for £20. They’ve also just added a deck of cards called Hub cards which help facilitate the discussion element, £7.59 for a pack.
