Voke App for Youth review by Becky Lawrence

Voke App for youth by Becky Lawrence, St Marks MK

I recently came across this free app called Voke, when researching resources.  It’s made by some Christian developers in the USA with developers worldwide and is aimed at young people 14+.  The best explanation of it is it’s a Christian YouTube with lots of different video contributors.  It’s designed so young people can share videos with their friends and create God focused conversations.  You can create private adventure groups on there and share particular videos with that group and they can share videos with their friends too.  There is also a private chat feature only viewable by your group on each video so you can discuss your thoughts after watching.

We’ve decided to use the Faith Adventure series, which is also called Nua and is a Scripture Union Ireland resource.  The videos focus on big questions of faith including, ‘How did we get here?’, ‘Are Christians hypocrites?’, ‘Did Jesus really rise from the dead?’ and ‘Is God good?’.

The app is aimed at young people 14+ so I gained permission from all of our parents of our 11, 12 and 13 year olds before we asked them to download it.  The series we’re using on the app however is aimed at 11+ but I still ran this past all our parents too via our parents WhatsApp group before we decided to use it.  So far all but one of my youth group has engaged, downloaded it and joined.  We’ve found it really useful especially with youth work currently being online, it means they can watch the videos remotely and we can discuss them when we meet every other week on zoom.

The Voke app is free on Apple store and Google store.
