Hikaru: Name above all Names by John Prockter is a manga-themed Christian allegory novel designed for youth groups (ages 8–14) to explore faith, the Gospel, and identity. It is available as a 12-week discipleship journey containing a book, short films, and session plans from Catalyst Youth Trust, focusing on themes like disappointment, responsibility, and community.

Manga is a unique art style commonly found in Japanese graphic novels and Japanese comic books.   The style is hugely popular with young people due to its highly relatable emotionally intense storylines focusing on school, life, friendship and overcoming adversity, and it’s appealing art styles. It serves as a strong form of escapism with diverse genres, accessible storytelling, and characters that offer emotional support during the turbulent teen years.
We had author and creator of the Hikaru book John Prockter on our Youthwork+ Podcast last year.  Since then he’s created a school lesson resource and a youth group resource to go with the book.  We think it is great – especially for young boys who can be notoriously difficult to engage in Christian content and the Bible because they assume it’s boring.  It’s not just for boys though, this resource is packaged in a way to excite all young people.  It’s also written in allegory – similarl to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.  The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe/ Narnia also famously had hidden Christian messages of salvation, ressurrection and grace, with Aslan the lion dying to right the wrongs, it looked like evil had won – but he didn’t stay dead, and evil didn’t win.
You can use the Hikaru books as gifts for joining your youth group, rights of passage or Christmas or any other reason – for young people to read in their own time.  You can also use the books and the resource in youth groups as discipleship to lead young people closer to God and help them understand some fundamental truths about him.
